Use of the publication

You're welcome to read everything on the site, share links to our pieces, quote short passages with attribution, and use what you learn here to take action in your own life. That's the entire point of publishing.

Safety-critical content

We write carefully about subjects where mistakes can cause real harm — security, food preservation, water treatment, electrical work, off-grid systems, first aid. We cite primary sources where it matters, and we have specialist contributors review the work.

That said: we are a publication, not a substitute for professional advice. If a piece on this site touches a domain where you would normally consult a professional, please consult a professional. If pressure canning a particular recipe seems risky, follow tested recipes from your national food safety authority. If a security situation is escalating, call the police. If you're unsure whether a wiring change is safe, hire an electrician. Reading our work is not the same as being qualified.

We accept responsibility for the accuracy of what we publish to the standard set out in our editorial standards. We do not accept responsibility for what you do with the information.
